The Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPS M ) is a scientific excellence cluster based in Munich . It is an amalgamation of research groups from the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich , the Technical University of Munich , the Helmholtz Center Munich and the Max Planck Institutes for Biochemistry and Neurobiology in Martinsried . The center deals with isolated proteins through to proteins in living organisms, using methods from biophysics , biochemistry , medicine and biology .
aims
Proteins , as biological macromolecules, play an important functional and structure-giving role in all living organisms, but this is not yet fully understood in detail. By examining isolated proteins through to proteins in living organisms ( e.g. zebrafish or Escherichia coli bacteria ), particularly with regard to interactions, structural influences ( e.g. protein folding, structure of protein complexes, interactions of proteins with nucleic acids and manipulation of protein functions) and neurodegenerative diseases, fundamental knowledge about these macromolecules should be obtained, which could enable advances in biomedicine and biotechnology in the future.
organization
The Cluster of Excellence is divided into six research areas.
Research Area | Research area | Principal Investigators | Junior Groups | Associate Professors |
---|---|---|---|---|
A. | Protein biophysics | Called, Bräuchle, Zinth, Gaub | Michaelis, Dietz | Lamb, hill |
B. | Protein folding and transport | Buchner, Soll, Kiefhaber, Heesemann, Hartl | Becker, Vothknecht | Richter, Schliwa, buying wine, winter |
C. | Protein Structure and Networks | Cramer, Sattler, Hopfner, Beckmann, Sattler, Kessler, Conti | Builder, Wilson | |
D. | Protein Nucleic Acid Interactions | Becker, Jung, Endres, Leonhardt, Eick | Schotta | Cremer, Hake, Imhoff, Storchowa |
E. | Protein Engineering and Chemical Genetics | Carell, Skerra, Langosch, Groll, Trauner, Sieber, man | Antees | Küster, Wester, Verhelst |
F. | Protein Function and Dysfunction in vivo | Haass, Konnerth, Biel, Götz, Misgeld | Bonhoefer |
Each area (A – F) is represented by two coordinators who, after consultation with the board, decide on the appointment of new professorships and choose the board of four researchers and one member responsible for the advancement of families and women from among their number. The members of the Executive Board are primarily responsible for research, teaching and the promotion of young academics and represent the cluster in front of the heads of their respective universities. The spokesman for the board of directors and his deputy are particularly concerned with looking after and recruiting young professors. The working group leaders (differentiated into Principal Investigators and Associate Investigators ) meet once a year at the General Assembly and decide on the distribution of the financial resources. The working groups are led individually and on the responsibility of the working group leader. Regular agreements between working group leaders and coordinators of the research area enable holistic management of the cluster. The role of the spokesman for the Cluster of Excellence also extends to representing the interests of the cluster vis-à-vis the participating universities and institutions, which is why he conducts negotiations with them on matters relating to teaching, funding and personnel. The administration and monitoring of all funds approved for the respective financial year, the hiring of staff, the management of all cluster matters, the purchase of large equipment and the organization of events such as symposia, conferences and workshops (see Events and Conferences ), as well as the processing of applications and public relations are the responsibility of the managing director.
Committee for the Advancement of Families and Women (AFF)
The funding of female researchers in the CIPS M is provided by the AFF funding program with the aim of increasing the proportion of researchers with children, female researchers with a habilitation or professorship, and female researchers in management positions. The committee is headed by the board member who is specifically responsible for promoting families and women. This funding program is intended to reduce the barriers to a scientific career caused by parental leave. As part of the program, young researchers with children can be provided with a position for a technical assistant ( TV-L E9 ) to support research, and domestic help for domestic support can be granted upon request. The CIPS M also operates its own day nursery for young researchers with children up to three years of age . A mentoring program is intended to support the successful appointment of female scientists and symposia with high-ranking women should give the researchers insights into career paths and experiences and promote scientific exchange.
financing
The financial resources of the CIPS M are made available in the course of the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Republic of Germany and the federal states in cooperation with the German Research Foundation and allocated according to needs.
Individual funding for scientists in the research cluster includes project-related funding for doctoral and postdoc positions, funding for the acquisition of large equipment and funding for symposia and special lectures in addition to funding within the framework of promoting women and families .
Research results and awards
In addition to the selection of the CIPS M Cluster as a Selected Landmark in the Land of Ideas , several CIPS M researchers were honored for the research results achieved within the scope of their work at the Cluster of Excellence:

Science Comment
The Science Comment project was set up by CIPS M in 2009 to create an opportunity to objectively comment on and discuss publications in relevant journals in the fields of chemistry, biology, pharmacy and medicine with the long-term goal of simplifying the international communication of research results. The registered user is able to make comments and criticisms publicly accessible with reference to a publication or to discuss the publication publicly. Science Comment serves as a database to give users an assessment of the quality of a result disseminated in a publication before it is used. The possibility of checking a published result for feasibility saves users time and money.
