Patrick Cramer

Patrick Cramer (born February 3, 1969 in Stuttgart ) is a German chemist , structural biologist and molecular biologist .

Life

Patrick Cramer studied chemistry from 1989 to 1995 at the Universities of Stuttgart and Heidelberg . He completed part of his studies as an Erasmus scholar at the University of Bristol in Great Britain . He carried out the research for his thesis with Sir Alan Fersht in Cambridge, Great Britain, where he got to know structural biology and the Laboratory for Molecular Biology (LMB ). In 1995 he graduated from Heidelberg University with a diploma . From 1995 to 1998 Cramer was a PhD student in Christoph W. Müller's group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble, France. In 1998 he received his doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. Nat.) At the University of Heidelberg. Between 1999 and 2001 Cramer worked as a postdoctoral fellow and fellow of the German Research Foundation in the laboratory of the later Nobel Prize winner Roger D. Kornberg at Stanford University in the USA.

In 2001, Patrick Cramer returned to Germany, where he received a tenure-track professorship for biochemistry at the gene center of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . There he was appointed full professor of biochemistry and head of the gene center in 2004. Cramer headed the Gene Center of the University of Munich for 10 years, from 2004 to 2013. Cramer was also at the University of Munich from 2007 to 2009 as Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, 2010 to 2013 as Director of the Department of Biochemistry, 2007 to 2013 as a member of the Research Committee and from 2008 to 2013 as spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 464 of the German Research Foundation .

On January 1, 2014, Patrick Cramer was appointed director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen , where he heads the "Molecular Biology" department.

Act

Patrick Cramer works primarily as a basic researcher, university lecturer and science manager. As a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford, Cramer determined the three-dimensional structure of RNA polymerase II , one of the largest enzymes in the cell nucleus . Roger Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2006 for “fundamental research into the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription”.

On the one hand, Patrick Cramer's laboratory examines the molecular mechanisms of gene transcription in eukaryotic cells. Structural biology methods are used for this purpose, in particular X-ray crystallography and cryo- electron microscopy . On the other hand, Patrick Cramer's group is researching the systemic principles of gene regulation in living cells with the help of functional genomics and bioinformatics .

Cramer's group produced the first molecularly resolved film of transcription initiation and elongation . Cramer also developed methods to analyze fundamental aspects of RNA metabolism in cells. Cramer contributes to the development of molecular systems biology by integrating approaches from molecular and systems biology. Patrick Cramer's long-term goal is to understand the expression and regulation of the genome.

In addition, Cramer is dedicated to the further development of the natural sciences in Germany and Europe. During his time in Munich he contributed to the expansion of the life sciences by co-founding the "Center for Integrated Protein Science (CIPSM)" cluster of excellence and initiating the new research building "Munich Research Center for Molecular Biosystems (BioSysM)". Cramer was also active in the scientific and technical advisory board of the Bavarian state government and in the field of bioethics at the TTN institute. He is active as an organizer of international conferences, as a reviewer and in several scientific committees and advisory boards. Since 2016 Cramer has chaired the Council of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).
