Cephalocereus senilis is a species of the genus Cephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet senilis means 'senile'. Trivial names are “Greisenhaupt” and “Viejo”.

Cephalocereus senilis grows with upright, light green, later graying shoots , is only branched at the base and reaches heights of up to 15 meters with a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. There are 20 to 30 low ribs with only a few butted ribs . The 1 to 5 strong central spines are yellowish to grayish and 1 to 5 centimeters long. The 20 to 30 hair-like radial spines are white and 6 to 12 inches long. The pseudocephalium , which initially only developed on one side, later encompasses the entire tip of the shoots. It consists of thick white hair.

The funnel-shaped, yellowish pink flowers are 8 to 9 centimeters long and 7 to 8 centimeters in diameter. Your pericarpel and the tube are hairy and covered with a few scales. The obovate fruits are not scaly and are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cephalocereus senilis is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Guanajuato, and Veracruz . The first description as Cactus senilis was published in 1824 by Adrian Hardy Haworth . Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer placed them in the genus Cephalocereus in 1838 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
