Cephalopholis is a genus of groupers (Epinephelidae). The fish live near the coast in tropical and subtropical regions of all oceans.

features

Cephalopholis species have an elongated, massive, cylindrical body that is barely compressed at the sides. Depending on the species, they reach lengths of 15 to 70 centimeters. The massive head can reach a third to almost half the standard length. The mouth is always longer than the diameter of the eyes. The front part of the jaw can have small "dog teeth". The palatine bone is also dentate.

The dorsal fin has nine hard and 13 to 17 soft rays. There are no elongated fin rays. The anal fin has three hard and seven to ten soft rays. It is rounded. The pectoral fins are symmetrical and rounded, the central fin rays are the longest. The caudal fin is rounded, straight or is slightly indented. The scales along the center of the body are ctenoid scales .

Some larger Cephalopholis species are fished in some areas and used as a source of protein for the local population. Because of their small size, most of the species are of no importance to the fishing industry.

distribution

Cephalopholis species occur in tropical regions of the Atlantic , Indian and Pacific Oceans . In the Mediterranean not have been Cephalopholis found species. C. fulva and C. cruentata live in the western Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico , while C. nigri and C. taeniops are found in the eastern Atlantic . The remaining almost twenty species live in the tropical Indo-Pacific . Most Cephalopholis species tend to be hidden in the clear water of the coral reefs from the intertidal zone to a depth of 200 meters.

After an extensive revision published in September 2018, 28 species are now included in the genera Cephalopholis .
