The Cercle de la Grande Société de Berne (dt. Big Society ) is a society founded in 1759 by the Bernese aristocracy and diplomacy .

history

The company was founded in 1759 based on its Dutch model, the Grande Société in The Hague , established in 1748 , and was accordingly called the Dutch Society at the outset. Little is known about the society and its work. Occasionally there are newspaper articles that report on the Grande Société de Berne . For example in the Bern daily newspaper " Der Bund " on April 6, 2009 on the occasion of the publication of a book on the 250th anniversary of the company. In the book The Victim's Fortune (2002) Richard Wolffe describes in detail the negotiations to process the Nazi money between the World Jewish Congress ( WJC ) under Israel Singer and Edgar Bronfman with the Swiss Bankers Association , represented by Georg Krayer ( Bank Sarasin ) and Hans J. Bär ( Bank Julius Baer ), on the firm's premises.

Premises

In the beginning, the Grande Société rented premises in the former house of the Mittellöwen Society , at the top of Kramgasse in Bern. In 1761 the company moved to the house of Bailiff Samuel Friedrich Fasnacht, also on Kramgasse. From 1766 the Grande Société planned a new building, preferring a project outside the city gates. In the same year, 24 members founded a society with the aim of building a theater and concert hall. A year later they offered the Grande Société premises in the planned construction. In 1769 the salons in the newly built Hôtel de Musique on Theaterplatz could be moved into. The premises still serve their purpose today.
