Hans J. Bear

Hans Julius Baer (born September 26, 1927 in Zurich ; † March 21, 2011 there ; entitled to live there ) was a Swiss banker .

Life

Hans J. Bär grew up in Zurich and New York. After studying engineering and economics in the USA , he joined the family business Bank Julius Baer in 1947 and became a partner in 1960. From 1975 to 1993, Hans J. Bär was Chairman of the Management Board and from 1994 to 1996 Chairman of the Board of Directors . Under his leadership, the company went public in 1980, changing from a family company to a public company.

In the 1990s, as a representative of the Swiss banks, he was a member of the first so-called Volcker Commission and helped to resolve the conflict over dormant assets .

Hans J. Bär was also culturally involved, including as President of the Tonhalle Society (1982 to 1992) and as founding president of the Zurich Festival .

Published in 2004 under the title Be embraced, millions. A life between Pearl Harbor and Ground Zero is his memoir . Since he criticized the Swiss banking secrecy in it , they caused big waves in Switzerland and especially in the Swiss banking world.

Hans J. Bär was married to Ilse Bär-Kaelin (1920–2002) for 48 years, with whom he had two children, Monique and Raymond. Son Raymond J. Baer (* 1959) was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank Julius Baer from 2003 to 2012, and Honorary Chairman since 2012.

Hans J. Bär died on March 21, 2011 after a long illness at the age of 83 in Zurich. The funeral service took place in the Fraumünster .
