Ceropegia linearis is a plant of the genus ceropegia ( ceropegia ) in the subfamily asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). The subspecies Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodi is an easy-care houseplant and “the” candlestick flower par excellence. It used to be seen as a separate species.
features
Ceropegia linearis has spherical root tubers that are rough on the outside . The twisting, creeping or hanging stems can be several meters long and their diameter is comparatively thin at 1 to 2 mm. The succulent leaves have petioles about 3 to 10 mm long. The lanceolate to heart-shaped and pointed leaf blade has a dark green upper side with white spots; the underside is light green, sometimes a little reddish.
The hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers are 2 to 2.5 centimeters long. The petals are fused. The coloring of the corolla tube and the corolla varies from green-white to whitish purple with dark purple stripes. The spherical to oval crown cup measures around 4 mm in diameter. It merges with a clear constriction into the corolla tube, which is about 2 mm in diameter. It widens only a little to about 3 mm in diameter and is light purple or purple-striped, at the upper end also whitish reticulated or dotted. The corolla lobes are concave inward and fused at the tips. The base is broadly triangular, in the further course towards the tip the corolla lobes are completely turned back along the central rib. The color varies from purple to light green. The length also varies.
Systematics
There are currently four subspecies , some of which each have several synonyms :
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. linearis (including Ceropegia caffrorum Schltr. , Ceropegia caffrorum var. dubia N.E.Br. )
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. debilis (NEBr.) H.Huber (Syn .: Ceropegia debilis N.E.Br. )
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. tenuis (NEBr.) Bruyns (Syn .: Ceropegia tenuis N.E.Br. )
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii (Schlechter) H.Huber (Syn .: Ceropegia woodii Schlechter , including Ceropegia euryacme Schltr. , Ceropegia leptocarpa Schltr. , Ceropegia barbetonensis N.E.Br. , Ceropegia hastata N.E.Br. , Ceropegia schoenlandii N.E.Br. ). It is still treated as a separate species in many popular science books and on websites.
Occurrence
The very large distribution area of this species extends from Kenya in the north via Malawi , Zimbabwe , Mozambique to South Africa .
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. linearis occurs in Mozambique and in South Africa ( KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape Province ).
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. debilis is based in Malawi .
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. tenuis is found in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
- Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii is restricted to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This subspecies Ceropegia linearis subsp. woodii is an easy to care for houseplant .
