The Sky Lake ( Changbaishan Tianchi ) is a crater lake in the Changbai Mountains on the border between North Korea and the People's Republic of China .
geography
It lies on the border between the Chinese province of Jilin and the North Korean province of Ryanggang-do . On the Chinese side, it belongs to the area of Fusong County of the prefecture -level city of Baishan .
The lake is located in a summit caldera of the active volcano Baitoushan (Paektusan) at an altitude of 2,189 m. It is one of the highest, largest and deepest crater lakes in the world. Its area is 9.82 km², it is a maximum of 384 m deep. The average depth is 213 meters, which corresponds to a volume of almost 2.1 km³. Although the lake is fed by two hot springs , its altitude makes it one of the coldest lakes in the world.
A circumnavigation of the lake along the shore corresponds to a distance of around 12 to 14 kilometers.
