The Chéticamp River is a river on the northwest of Cape Breton Island in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia .
The Chéticamp River forms the outlet of the Chéticamp Flowage reservoir on the plateau of the Cape Breton Highlands . It flows in a predominantly westerly direction in the extreme south and later along the southern border of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park to the west coast of the island and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence . The Cabot Trail crosses the river north of the village of Chéticamp . The Chéticamp River then flows into its estuary , a lagoon . The Chéticamp River has a length of approximately 30 km. It drains an area of approx. 200 km². The mean discharge at the gauge above Robert Brook is 10.7 m³ / s.
The Chéticamp River forms a spawning area for Atlantic salmon .
About a tenth of the runoff from the Chéticamp Flowage reservoir is diverted to the east coast of the island for hydropower purposes .
