The Chapada Diamantina is a low mountain range in the Brazilian state of Bahia . It covers an area of ​​around 38,000 km². The foot of the mountain is about 400 meters high, the highest points are the peaks of Pico do Barbado at 2033 meters and Pico das Almas at 1980 meters.

From August to October it is very dry, the subsequent rainy season lasts from November to March.

Very different types of vegetation can be found in the Chapada Diamantina. They include rainforest on the precipitation- rich eastern edge of the Chapada, the inland delta of the Marimbus swamps, various dry forest and dry bush communities , savannahs and gallery forests . Since the natural vegetation is threatened by human use, around a tenth of the area of ​​the Chapada Diamantina is under protection today. In addition to the Chapada Diamantina National Park, there are the Marimbus / Iraquara and Serra do Barbado protected areas as well as the Parque Estadual do Morro do Chapéu and the Parque Municipal Semper Viva .
