A chaperone (French for “ chaperone ”) is an assistant to the anti-doping commissioner at sports competitions .

He is responsible for accompanying the athletes invited to the anti-doping control from the end of the sports tournament until they enter the doping control room. It is hoped that this will result in an even more complete control system in the fight against doping . Critics counter that the use of chaperones only combats a small part of the disguise of doping, namely the possible manipulation of urine by the athlete before it is given, for example by introducing foreign urine.

Chaperons were first used in cycling after a request by ARD as a condition for broadcasting the 2007 Germany Tour . Since July 2007, the chaperone has been intended as a companion for almost all cycling races in the catchment area of the Association of German Cyclists . At the beginning of the 2009/2010 season, the German Football Association introduced the use of chaperones in the games of the German Bundesliga . The Austrian NADA uses its chaperones (mostly external employees) in areas such as swimming , cycling and beach volleyball .
