Charco Azul (Blue Pond) is a bay with a sea swimming pool on the rocky northeast coast of the Canary Island of La Palma and is located in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces . The bay is north of the village of San Andrés and south of the fishing port of Puerto Espíndola . There are three small pools in it, which are fed by sea water and allow a bath: the eponymous Charco Azul , the Charco de los Guardias and the Charco de las Damas , which are accessed via stairs and paths.

Sea swimming pool

The Charco Azul swimming pool is protected against the surf of the Atlantic by a wall through which the pool has a direct seawater inlet. The water in the pool is therefore mostly calm. There is also a children's pool that is supplied with Atlantic water by pumps. Severe storms and thunderstorms in 2008 and 2009 resulted in severe damage to the sea pool; it was repaired again in the following years. Not far from the walled-in basin, it is also possible to swim or fish in the natural pools that have been left in their original state. In addition to changing rooms, the facility also includes a restaurant with bar and veranda. Visitor parking spaces and a stop for bus line 104, which runs three times a day (not on weekends), have been set up above the facility.

Surroundings

Paseo Marítimo Charco Azul (with a historic lime kiln)

The Paseo Marítimo , a well-developed promenade along the sea, runs between Charco Azul and San Andrés .

Above the cliff there are around twenty houses (farmsteads, houses, workplaces) along the Camino El Melonar road . The landscape above the rocky coast is dominated by the predominant banana and, to a lesser extent, sugar cane cultivation in the region . The distillery , a little further north at Punta Espíndola, specializes primarily in rum and rum liqueurs and aguardiente made from sugar cane juice (from La Palma) . In the building of the distillery and sugar cane mill, there is a factory outlet and the museum on the history of sugar cane cultivation and rum: Centro de Interpretación de la Caña de Azúcar y el Ron .
