Charles-François Poërson

Charles-François Poerson (* 20th October 1653 in Paris ; † 2 September 1725 in Rome ) was a French painter of the Baroque .

Life

Charles-François Poërson was the only surviving son of the painter Charles Poerson (1609–1667) and his wife Françoise-Marguerite Bruyant (c. 1610–1670), along with four sisters . He learned painting from his father and Noël Coypel .

From 1704 until his death in 1725 he was director of the Académie de France à Rome . He got there for the first time in November 1672 with Coypel, when he became director there. In 1677 he is back in Paris. In 1782 he became a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture , in 1687 (deputy) and 1695 (full) professor, as the successor to René-Antoine Houasse .

In 1692 he married Marie-Philiberte de Chaillou († 1736). In 1711 he received the Knight's Cross from St. Lazarus . In December 1713 he was reprimanded by the king for having, congratulated by the Pope, accepted Carlo Maratta's title of Prince of the Accademia di San Luca ( Academy of Saint Luke ).

His works include the debate between Neptune and Minerva in Fontainebleau Castle . In Rome he mainly painted portraits , as well as a commission from Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni .

Poërson died in Rome in 1725. He is buried in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in a tomb made by the stonemason Pierre de L'Estache .
