Charles Augustus Young

Charles Augustus Young (born December 15, 1834 in Hanover , New Hampshire , † January 3, 1908 ) was an American astronomer.

Young studied at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he was appointed professor in 1865 . In 1871 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1872 to the National Academy of Sciences . In 1877 he moved to Princeton .

His main research topics were solar eclipses and the spectroscopy of sunlight .

He was considered a particularly good teacher and wrote a very popular and widely read astronomical text including a manual of astronomy. Henry Norris Russell , Raymond Smith Dugan and John Quincy Stewart called their astronomy textbook, published in 1927, A Revision of Young's Manual of Astronomy .

Appreciation

The asteroid (2165) Young was named after him at the suggestion of Frank K. Edmondson .
