Charles Bonnier

Charles Bonnier (born June 7, 1863 in Templeuve, Département Nord , † December 31, 1926 in Cannes ) was a French socialist intellectual and Romanist who worked as a university teacher in England.

life and work

Bonnier graduated from the École des Chartes , failed with his thesis, rejected by Paul Meyer in 1887 , and went to the University of Halle through the mediation of Gaston Paris . There he did his doctorate under Hermann Suchier with the thesis On the French proper names in old and modern times (Halle 1888). Since the Prussian government refused the committed socialist a job as a lecturer, he went to England (where he came into contact with Friedrich Engels ) and taught unscheduled in Oxford from 1990 to 1900 and at Liverpool University from 1900 to 1913 , first as a lecturer, from 1905 on the newly established 'James Barrow Chair of French'. He returned to his homeland in northern France, but suffered from the four-year German war occupation and lived in seclusion until his death. Joseph Bédier was one of his friends . His older brothers were Louis (1856-1946), Jules (1859-1908) and Pierre (1861-1918).
