Charles Caccia

Charles L. Caccia (born April 28, 1930 in Milan , Italy , † May 3, 2008 in Ottawa ) was a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada .

From 1968 to 2004 Caccia was a member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Davenport in Ontario . He was Professor of Forestry at the University of Toronto .

Under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau he was from September 22, 1981 to August 11, 1983 Minister of Labor in the Canadian Cabinet and from August 12, 1983 to June 29, 1984 Canadian Environment Minister. He continued this office under Prime Minister John Turner from June 30, 1984 to September 16, 1984.

He has also served as Parliamentary Secretary on several occasions, including for the Advocate General of Canada, the President of the Treasury Board and the Minister for Labor and Immigration. Caccia also chaired the Environment and Sustainable Development Committee. From 2002 to 2004, Caccia was Dean of the House of the Canadian House of Commons.

Caccia was considered a left-wing liberal MP who was committed to environmental issues and criticized the Iraq war in 2003 .

In the election of the Liberal Party leader in 2003, Caccia was one of the few people who supported the left-wing liberal candidate Sheila Copps against the right-wing liberal Paul Martin . He won the election and was elected Prime Minister of Canada in 2004. In the 2004 parliamentary elections, Paul Martin supported former city councilor Mario Silva for the Liberal Party in the Davenport constituency . Caccia then withdrew his candidacy and also decided against running as an independent.
