Dolo Coker

Charles Mitchell Coker (* 16th November 1927 in Hartford , Connecticut ; † 13. April 1983 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American pianist of modern jazz . He played with Art Pepper , Sonny Stitt and Dexter Gordon .

Coker studied music in Florence and at the Mather Academy in Camden , South Carolina , worked in 1946 with Ben Webster , in 1955 with Kenny Dorham . From 1955 to 1957 he played with Sonny Stitt , then with Gene Ammons and Lou Donaldson , Erskine Hawkins in 1959, as well as with Ruth Brown , Clyde McPhatter , Philly Joe Jones and from 1960 to 1961 with Dexter Gordon . During this time he also worked on the albums Intensity and The Way It Was by Art Pepper . From 1961 Coker led a trio in Los Angeles. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked a. a. with John Collins , Sonny Criss , Harry Sweets Edison , Lee Konitz , Sam Noto and Sahib Shihab .
