Charles Dantzig (born October 7, 1961 in Tarbes , Hautes-Pyrénées , France ) is a French author , poet and editor .

Life

Dantzig comes from a family of professors in medicine. After completing his Baccalauréat (Abitur), he studied law at the University of Toulouse . His doctoral thesis , which he submitted in Paris at the age of 28 , dealt with the " freedoms of the air ", the aviation rights of airlines .

His professional career began in 1995 at the Paris publishing house Les Belles Lettres , where he was responsible for the three book series Brique ( contemporary literature ), Eux & nous ( classical philology ) and Trésors de la Nouvelle (new publications). After translating works by Fitzgerald and Oscar Wilde himself, he was responsible for the first publication of a collection of poems by Francis Scott Fitzgerald . Under his leadership, the publisher was the first to publish the complete works of Marcel Schwob as well as anthologies with poems by the Symbolists , the Greek classics and Voltaire .

Dantzig published his first essays , poems and novels during this time . When he moved to the Paris publishing house Éditions Grasset in 2003, he became editor. In addition, he was in charge of the publisher's so-called Cahiers rouges (Rote Hefte). In this series, both classics such as Jean de La Ville Mirmont and Jean Desbordes , as well as authors of the 20th century such as Harold Nicolson , George Moore and Robert de Saint-Jean were published. The series also contained works previously unpublished in France, for example by Samuel Beckett , Bernard Frank (1929-2006) and Truman Capote . The Grasset publishing house also published some biographies under his leadership, for example by Irène Némirovsky , Pascal Jardin and Jules Michelet .
