Charles Diehl (born January 19, 1859 in Strasbourg , † November 1, 1944 in Paris ) was a French historian, he is considered a co-founder of modern Byzantine studies . In addition, he dealt with the Republic of Venice .

Life

Diehl studied from 1878 to 1881 at the École normal supérieure in Paris, from 1881 to 1882 he was a member of the École française de Rome , from 1883 to 1885 of the École française d'Athènes . In 1888 he received his doctorate. From 1885 he taught at the University of Nancy , from 1891 as a professor, and from 1899 onwards, Byzantine art and history at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1904 he was appointed there and from 1907 he was professor of Byzantine history.

Since 1897 Diehl was a corresponding member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres , since 1910 a full member, in 1921 he became its president. In 1925 he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and in 1937 of the British Academy .

One of his students was Dionysios Zakythinos .
