Charles Dobias

Charles Karol Dobias (born August 6, 1914 in Klátova Nová Ves , † March 12, 2001 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , Canada ) was a Canadian violinist .

Originally from Slovakia , Dobias came to Toronto at the age of seven . He studied at the Royal Conservatory with Kathleen Parlow . In 1955 he played a role in the Canadian television series Folio .

A scholarship from the Canada Council enabled him to attend summer courses with Josef Suk from 1972 to 1974. He was a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa and took part in its concert tours through Japan, England and France. As concertmaster and soloist with the National Ballet Company of Canada , he toured Canada, the United States and Mexico.

In 1970 Dobias was concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra , in 1972 concertmaster of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and second concertmaster of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra . In 1996 he founded the Slovak National Violin Competition in Bratislava , which he directed until 2000.
