Charles Emory Patton

Charles Emory Patton (born July 5, 1859 in Curwensville , Clearfield County , Pennsylvania , †  December 15, 1937 in West Grove , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1915 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Patton was the son of Congressman John Patton (1823-1897) and the younger brother of US Senator John Patton Jr. (1850-1907) from Michigan . He attended the public schools in his home country. In 1878 he graduated from Dickinson Seminary in Williamsport . Then he worked in the wood industry. He later ran Curwensville Electric Co. He also worked in construction and banking. He was also a director at Curwensville National Bank . In his hometown he was also president of the school committee, member of the local council and mayor ( Burgess ).

Politically, Patton joined the Republican Party . In the 1910 congressional election he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Charles Frederick Barclay on March 4, 1911 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1915 . During this time the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. In 1914 he renounced another candidacy.

Between 1915 and 1920, Charles Patton was Pennsylvania State Secretary of Agriculture. He then worked his farm in Chester County , where he died on December 15, 1937. He was buried in his birthplace, Curwensville.
