Charles Gilbert Heathcote

Charles Gilbert Heathcote (born March 2, 1841 at Conington Castle , Huntingdonshire , † November 15, 1913 in Kilmeston , Hampshire ) was an English lawyer , tennis player and hobby painter.

Life

Heathcote was born at Conington Castle in 1841 to John Heathcote Huntingdon and his third wife, Emily Colbourne. He studied at the colleges of Eton and Cambridge . From 1867 he worked as a barrister .

In 1868 he was one of the founders of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and was involved in the development of modern tennis rules in the wake of the first Wimbledon tournament . Charles participated in the first Wimbledon Championships from 1877 to 1880 . He achieved his best result in 1877 when he lost in the semi-finals to the eventual winner Spencer Gore . In 1869 he married Lucy Edith Wrottesley.

Heathcote died at Kilmeston Manor in Kilmeston in 1913 .
