Charles Hope (art historian)

Charles Hope (born April 11, 1945 ) is a British art historian and was the director of the Warburg Institute in London .

Life

Hope was the son of Sir Archibald Philip Hope, 17th Baron von Craighall and his wife Ruth (née Davis). He attended Eton College before studying history and art history at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. In 1975 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Balliol College , Oxford. He did his Master of Arts at London University . He then worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Warburg Institute. He headed this institute from 2002 to 2010, and was succeeded by Peter Mack. Professor Hope's specialty is the art of the Italian Renaissance from 1400 to 1600. He is a particular connoisseur of the painting of Titian , Giorgione and other northern Italian artists and he has dealt intensively with early art historiography, especially the work of Giorgio Vasari . Hope is a professor of classical history.

Hope has been married to Jennifer Katharine since December 20, 1970 and has one son.
