Charles Lenormant (born June 1, 1802 in Paris , † November 22, 1859 in Athens ) was a French archaeologist and Egyptologist .

Lenormant initially studied law, then devoted himself to archaeological studies and traveled to Egypt with Jean-François Champollion in 1828 and took part in the French Morea expedition in 1829 . On his return he became head of the Beaux Arts department in the Ministry of Education in 1830, then curator at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal , and from 1832 at the Bibliothèque nationale , particularly at the Cabinet des Médailles . From 1840 to 1859 he headed the cabinet, from 1835 to 1846 he was professor of history at the Sorbonne . At the instigation of the students, he had to resign from the professorship due to his emphatic Catholicism. In 1849 he received a professorship for Egyptian language and archeology at the Collège de France . He had been a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres since 1839 and , at the suggestion of Theodor Panofka and August Böckh, a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences since 1845 . He worked closely with Jean-Joseph-Antoine-Marie de Witte .

In 1826 he married the daughter of Julie Récamier , which gave him access to Paris society. Her son was the archaeologist François Lenormant . His tomb is on the Colonos Hill in Athens.
