Charles Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough
Charles William Francis Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough (born October 20, 1850 , † April 17, 1926 ) was a British politician and nobleman who inherited the title of Earl of Gainsborough in 1881 and thereby became a member of the House of Lords , to which he belonged until his death in 1926.
Life
Noel was the eldest son of Charles Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough and his wife Ida Harriet Augusta Hay, a daughter of William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll and Elizabeth FitzClarence . He entered the military and was most recently a lieutenant in the 10th Royal Hussars cavalry regiment .
After his father's death on August 13, 1881, he inherited the title of 3rd Earl of Gainsborough, in the County of Lincoln and the associated subordinate title of 3rd Viscount Campden, of Campden in the County of Gloucester , 5. Baron Barham, of Barton Court and Teston in the County of Kent , 3rd Baron Noel, of Ridlington in the County of Rutland and 5th Baronet Middleton, of Barham Court and Teston, in the County of Kent . This also made him a member of the House of Lords, which he belonged to until his death on April 17, 1926. At times he also served as a magistrate (justice of the peace) of Worcestershire , Gloucestershire and Rutland . In addition, he was at times Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Rutland.
Charles Noel was married twice. From his first marriage to Augusta Mary Catherine Berkeley, the daughter Agnes Mary Catherine Noel was born. From the second marriage with Mary Elizabeth Dease on February 2, 1880, the second eldest daughter Norah Ida Emily Noel and three sons emerged, including the eldest son Arthur Edward Joseph Noel , who after his death was named 4th Earl of Gainsborough as well inherited the subordinate title. The second son Charles Hubert Francis Noel served as a Major in the Guards Grenadier Regiment Coldstream Guards in the First and Second World War , while the third and youngest son, Robert Edmund Thomas More Noel as Captain of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in active service in Massassi, in present-day Tanzania , died in 1918.
