Charles Onyeama

Charles Dadi Onyeama (born August 5, 1917 in Eke near Enugu , † September 5, 1999 ) was a Nigerian lawyer . He served in various courts in his home country, including the Supreme Court from 1964 to 1966, and was a judge at the International Court of Justice from 1967 to 1976 .

Life

Charles Onyeama was born in Eke near Enugu in 1917 and completed his academic training at King's College in Lagos , at Achimota College in what was then the British colony of Gold Coast ( Ghana since 1957 ), at University College London and at Brasenose College in Oxford . After returning to Nigeria, he served as a member of the legislative assembly there. From 1946 to 1951 he was a member of the Eastern House of Assembly , from 1948 to 1950 a committee for drafting a constitution . From 1952 to 1956 he served as the Supreme Magistrate (Justice of the Peace) of Nigeria.

From 1956 to 1957 Charles Onyeama served as a judge on the High Court of West Nigeria and from 1957 to 1964 as a judge on the High Court of Lagos, of which he served as acting president from 1961 and 1963. From 1964 to 1966 he was a member of the Supreme Court in his home country. At the end of 1966 he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague , where he served for a regular nine-year term from 1967 to 1976. His compatriot Taslim Olawale Elias was his successor at the ICJ . From 1982 to 1990 he was a judge at the World Bank Administrative Court .

Charles Onyeama was first married from 1950 and second from 1966 and is the father of five sons and two daughters. He died in 1999.
