Charles Maurice Petty-Fitzmaurice, 9th Marquess of Lansdowne LVO DL (born February 21, 1941 ), is a British peer and Vice-Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire . From 1944 to 1997 he carried the courtesy title of Earl of Shelburne .

He is the son of George Petty-FitzMaurice, 8th Marquess of Lansdowne , a former Conservative politician and Barbara, nee. Chase. His father inherited the title of nobility and Bowood House in Wiltshire from a cousin, the 7th Marquess of Lansdowne, who died in 1944. From 1956 to 1957 he was the Page of Honor of Queen Elizabeth II.

Career

He served in the Kenya Regiment from 1960 to 1961 . In 1962 he became Second Lieutenant in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry and in 1971 he was transferred to the Royal Yeomanry with the Royal Armored Corps with the rank of lieutenant .

He was a member of Calne and Chippenham Rural District Council from 1964 to 1973, President of the Wiltshire Playing Fields Association from 1965 to 1974, of Wiltshire County Council from 1970 to 1985 and of North Wiltshire District Council from 1973 to 76 . He was 1970-1973 Chairman of the Calne and Chippenham Rural District Council and 1973-1976 of the North Wiltshire District Council. In 1990 he became Deputy Lieutenant for Wiltshire . Since 1994 he has served as President of the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust .

In the British general election in 1979 , he ran in Coventry North East for the Conservative Party . At the death of his father on August 25, 1997, he became Marquess of Lansdowne and Member of the House of Lords . In 2001 he became a lieutenant in the Royal Victorian Order shortly after retiring from the Prince's Council of the Duchy of Cornwall .

family

His first marriage was on October 9, 1965, Lady Frances Helen Mary Eliot (March 6, 1943 - January 6, 2004), daughter of Nicholas Eliot, 9th Earl of St Germans , the marriage was divorced in 1987. The two had four children:

  • Lady Arabella Helen Mary Petty-Fitzmaurice, now Lady Arabella Unwin (born August 30, 1966), married to Rupert Unwin, three children.
  • Lady Rachel Barbara Violet Petty-Fitzmaurice (born January 30, 1968), married to James Spickernell, four children.
  • Simon Petty-FitzMaurice, Earl of Kerry (born November 24, 1970), unmarried.
  • Lord William Nicholas Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice (* September 25, 1973) married to Rebecca Sansum (* 1982) from Chippenham , Wiltshire, three daughters:

In 1987 he married Fiona Mary Merritt (* 1954), daughter of Donald Merritt and Lady Davies, an interior designer who is known by her married name Fiona Shelburne.
