The Duchy of Cornwall ( English : Duchy of Cornwall ) is one of two royal duchies in England , next to the Duchy of Lancaster . The eldest son of the ruling British monarch inherits the duchy and the title of Duke of Cornwall , either at the time of his birth or when his parents ascend the throne. In the absence of male offspring, the lands of the duchy belong directly to the crown and there is no duke. Acting Duke is Charles, Prince of Wales .

Possessions and finances

The duchy has lands with a total size of 540.90 km². Almost half of the property is in Devon , with the remainder in 23 other counties, mainly Cornwall , Herefordshire and Somerset . In total there are over 3500 individual leased properties. These include agricultural and forestry operations, office buildings, workshops, the model town of Poundbury , Highgrove House and The Oval cricket ground . The Duchy also includes the Isles of Scilly excluding their capital, but serves as the port authority of St Mary’s .

In the 2007/08 fiscal year, the value of the Duchy was £ 647 million and its profit was £ 16.3 million. As a royal property, the Duchy of Cornwall is not taxable, although the Prince has voluntarily paid income tax and capital gains tax since 1993 . He uses the income to make a living and supports charitable organizations.

administration

The administrative headquarters of the Duchy of Cornwall has been located in London at 10 Buckingham Gate, opposite Buckingham Palace , since 1857 . Before that, the offices were in Somerset House . The agricultural and forestry operations are managed from St. Mary's, Liskeard (Cornwall) and Newton Saint Loe (near Bath ). More than 100 permanent employees are employed.

The duchy is headed by the Prince's Council , which usually holds meetings twice a year and can be compared to the board of directors of a private company. The Prince of Wales acts as chairman. There are also the Receiver General (Treasurer), the Attorney General (Legal Adviser), the Lord Warden of the Stannaries (Guardian of the Tin Mines) and the Secretary and Keeper of the Records (Secretary and Secretary).

The only member of the Prince's Council with executive functions is the Secretary and Keeper of the Records , who presides over the Executive Board. In the Middle Ages this position corresponded to that of a clerk ; today it is comparable to that of a CEO . The most senior advisor on matters affecting the Duchy of Cornwall has traditionally been the Lord Warden of the Stannaries . This now purely ceremonial office used to include judicial and military functions.
