Charles de Lorraine , the fourth Duc de Guise (born August 20, 1571 in Joinville , † September 30, 1640 near Cuna , Italy ) was a prince from a younger branch of the House of Lorraine .

Life

Charles was the eldest son of Henri I de Lorraine, duc de Guise , Prince of Joinville and Catherine of Kleve , a countess of Eu . After the murder of his father by the bodyguard Henri III. of France on December 23, 1588, members of the House of Guise were arrested on the orders of the king. However, Charles escaped and went into hiding in Paris. After the death of Henri III. he submitted to his successor, he paid homage to Henri IV and received Provence as a fief instead of the province of Champagne that had been drawn up from his father . The king also appointed him Grand Master of France , also in succession to his father .

Charles de Guise served under Louis XIII. , took part in the wars against the Huguenots and sided with the Queen Mother Maria de 'Medici in the dispute against Cardinal Richelieu . He finally fell out with the king and went to Italy in 1631, where he died on September 30, 1640.

His marriage to Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse (1585–1656), widow Henri de Bourbons (1563–1608), Duke of Montpensier, whom he married on January 6, 1611, had nine children:
