Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse (born January 8, 1585 in the Louvre , Paris , † February 25, 1656 ) was the daughter of Henri de Joyeuse and Catherine Nogaret.

Life

Henriette Catherine de Joyeuse was born on January 8, 1585 in the Louvre as the daughter of Henri de Joyeuse, Comte du Bouchage, and Catherine Nogaret de la Valette, sister of the Duke of Épernon . Henriette was Duchess of Joyeuse from 1608 to 1647 and Princess of Joinville from 1641 to 1654 .

After her mother died and her father entered the Capuchin Order, she lived with her paternal grandmother, Marie de Batarnay. After her death in 1595, Henriette's father took care of her again. In 1597 she married Henri de Bourbon, Duc de Montpensier . The marriage had a daughter, Marie , who was born on October 15, 1605 in Gaillon in Normandy . After she was widowed in 1608, Henriette married on January 5, 1611 Charles de Lorraine, 4th Duc de Guise . They had 11 children together. Henriette Catherine was the grandmother of Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans , the Grande Mademoiselle.

Although she led a pious life, was close to the royal family and was a friend of Maria de Médicis , Henriette Catherine had to follow her husband into exile in Florence in March 1635 as a result of the intrigues against Cardinal Richelieu . She stayed there until Charles' death in September 1640.

After her return to France, Henriette Catherine devoted herself to charity and pious works. She died on February 25, 1656 at the age of 71 and was buried in the church of the Capuchin monastery in Paris. In the course of work, her coffin was brought to light around 1854 in the Rue de la Paix.
