For men, individual and team competitions were held with the foil , the rapier and the saber from 1950 . For women, an individual competition with the foil was also held from 1950, and a team competition with the foil took place in 1966 and 1970. Six nations managed to win medals: by far the most successful nation in this period was England , whose athletes won 38 of the 44 gold medals awarded. There were also 16 silver and 11 bronze medals. Australia won three gold medals , followed by Scotland with two gold medals and Canada and New Zealand with one gold medal each. Wales was the only nation in the medal table to win neither gold nor silver medals, but four bronze medals.
