Charles du Plessis d'Argentré (born May 16, 1673 in Argentré-du-Plessis , † October 27, 1740 in Tulle ) was a French bishop .

Life

Charles du Plessis d'Argentré was born in 1673 at Argentré-du-Plessis Castle near Vitré in Brittany. He studied philosophy at the Collège de Beauvais in Paris and theology at the Sorbonne . Since 1698 a member of the Société de la Sorbonne, he received his doctorate in theology on March 29, 1700 and in the same year witnessed the election and coronation of Pope Clement XI. in Rome. In 1702 the Duke of Trémoille, his godfather, made him dean of Saint-Tugal in Laval and in 1707 the Bishop of Tréguier made him his vicar general , two years later the king appointed him his almsman . Du Plessis was the first almsman to whom the king gave the office free of charge. In this capacity he assisted on October 25, 1722 at the coronation of Louis XV. in Reims . Appointed Bishop of Tulle in October 1723 , he was ordained on June 10, 1725 in Saint-Sulpice.

Bishop du Plessis d'Argentré is described as faithful, charitable, and hardworking. He left behind several works of theological and ascetic content in French and Latin. - He was the uncle of the bishops Louis-Charles du Plessis d'Argentré of Limoges and Jean-Baptiste du Plessis d'Argentré of Sées .
