Charlie Edwards (* 8. February 1993 in Surrey , England ) is a British professional boxer and current WBC world champion at flyweight .

Amateur career

Charlie Edwards won the gold medal in the 2007 European Schoolchildren Championships in the weight class up to 38.5 kg and a bronze medal in the light flyweight division at the 2011 European Championships .

He was also British Junior Champion in 2008, British Champion in 2010, English and British Champion in 2011 and English Champion in 2014.

Professional career

Edwards is under contract with Matchroom Boxing and is trained by Adam Booth. Previous coaches were Danny Vaughan and Brian O'Shaughnessy.

He made his debut on January 31, 2015 at the O2 Arena in London . In September 2015, he won the English Championship in his fifth fight against the previously undefeated Louis Norman and defended the title against Phil Smith. In February 2016 he won the WBC International Silver title against Luke Wilton and was able to box on September 10, 2016 in his only ninth fight for the IBF World Flyweight Championship, but lost to John Riel Casimero .

In April 2017 he became British champion by beating Iain Butcher and secured the WBA Continental title against Anthony Nelson in June 2018 . On December 22, 2018, he defeated Cristofer Rosales in the fight for the WBC World Flyweight Championship.

He won his first title defense on March 23, 2019 unanimously on points against the Spaniard Angel Moreno.

On August 31, 2019, he boxed in his second title defense against the Mexican Julio Cesar Martinez Aguilar and was knocked down in the third round and counted by the referee. Since the last blow had hit Edwards when he was already kneeling on the ground, the action was rated as a foul and the fight was judged to be valueless. Edwards remained world champion, and a rematch was agreed.
