Charles Richard "Charlie" Thomson also known as "Chic" Thomson (born March 2, 1930 in Perth , † January 6, 2009 in Nottingham ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper . He won the English championship with Chelsea in 1955 , played 16 league games and four years later stood for Nottingham Forest in winning the FA Cup between the posts.

Athletic career

Thomson began his goalkeeping career as a professional in the Scottish homeland with FC Clyde . However , he owed his move to the English first division club Chelsea FC in October 1952 because of his good performance during his military service. It was there that Ted Drake discovered him , who was still the coach of Reading FC at the time . When Drake signed on with the Blues, Thomson was one of his first signings. The transfer fee for "Chic", as Thomson was called, was 5,000 pounds and in the remainder of the 1952/53 season, the newcomer completed 22 competitive games.

In the following sporting upward trend of the club, Thomson initially had only a smaller share, as his competitor Bill Robertson rose to the regular goalkeeper. After a break of almost eleven months, he returned to the regular formation on January 22, 1955 and with a total of 16 league appearances was largely responsible for Chelsea winning the English championship. The highlight was his performance on April 9, 1955 in a duel against direct competitor Wolverhampton Wanderers , in which he saved the 1-0 victory against Johnny Hancocks . The sporting breakthrough in London was still denied him and a good two years later Thomson moved to Nottingham Forest .

Thomson was the first choice goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest for four years. He completed 121 league games and in 1959 he won the FA Cup with "Forest" after a 2-1 final win over Luton Town . Even after his footballing career ended, he continued to live in Nottingham, where he finally died in early 2009.
