Reviews

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory received mixed reviews. While the performance of actor Douglas Hodge as Willy Wonka and the spectacular stage design were praised, the book adaptation was described as lengthy and the music as uninspired. Many reviews compared the musical with the Roald Dahl adaptation Matilda by Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly , which is unanimously seen as the better of the two.

Roald Dahl's daughters Lucy and Ophelia attended the premiere and judged that their father would have been pleased with the adaptation.
