Charlotte Hartwig

Charlotte Hartwig (born Otto ; born October 14, 1920 in Chemnitz ; † 2009 ) was a German resistance fighter against fascism and a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR .

Life

Hartwig, from a middle-class family, attended elementary and high school. She actively resisted the Hitler regime and was imprisoned in Waldheim prison, from which she was liberated by Soviet soldiers in May 1945.

She returned to her hometown of Chemnitz in 1945 and became active in an anti-fascist youth group whose leader was Helmut Hartwig . Both were nominated by the SED as members of the FDJ in 1946 and elected to the Chemnitz city council. They married in 1947. She then worked as a cultural advisor for the FDJ in Dresden and, as a member of the VVN parliamentary group, was a member of the People's Chamber from 1950 to 1954 . In 1980 she retired and lived in Berlin.
