The Chaumont River (also: Catfish Creek ) is a river in Jefferson County , New York State with a length of 46.8 km (29.1 miles). It rises east of the village of La Fargeville in the town of Orleans and flows into Chaumont Bay at Chaumont . The river is not navigable and has several rapids and weirs between the source and Depauville, about halfway along the course of the river.
In the catchment area of the river there are mostly small settlement areas and agriculturally used areas. This significantly affects the water quality; the river is over-fertilized. For this reason, since 2015, a water protection project to improve and renaturate the water has been pursued under the leadership of Town Lyme . Several endangered species of birds, fish and turtles live in the catchment area.
