Cheese (Engl. For Smile! ) Is a free software for recording still pictures and videos with the help of a webcam , with different visual effects in real time can be added. From version 2.22.0 Cheese is an official part of the Gnome desktop environment .
Development history
Cheese was created as a free alternative to the macOS Photo Booth program . Daniel Siegel developed the first program versions as part of the Google Summer of Codes 2007, with Raphaël Slinckx acting as mentor.
When designing the user interface , the special requirements of netbooks were taken into account, which is why the program is already included in many Linux distributions optimized for this area of application (such as the Ubuntu Netbook Remix ).
Range of functions
Cheese has a shutter release delay and uses the screen as a rudimentary flash . In addition, images for photo series can be created automatically at regular intervals. Images and videos can be viewed while they are being recorded and also in full screen mode .
The program is well integrated in Gnome, for example images can be used for user account photos (gnome-about-me), viewed and managed in F-Spot or exported to the Flickr photo portal .
