Cher Wang ( Chinese  王雪紅  /  王雪红 , Pinyin Wáng Xuěhóng ; born September 14, 1958 in Taipei ) is a Taiwanese entrepreneur and philanthropist . She is co-founder and CEO of HTC (High Tech Computer Corporation) , one of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world. Her father Wang Yung-ching , a co-founder of the Formosa Plastic Group , was also one of Taiwan's most famous billionaires.

Wang went to Los Angeles with her sister when she was nearly 15 years old. However, she only spent a short time there. Her sister moved to Detroit when her husband got a new job. Cher did not go with them, but went to College Preparatory School in Oakland. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of California, Berkeley . She originally wanted to pursue a career in music, but she gave up on her dream and studied economics instead. In 1981 she received her Masters degree from Berkeley. 

Career

Cher Wang joined First International Computer (FIC) in 1982 . In 1987 Cher Wang was one of the founding members of VIA . In 1997 she founded the company HTC together with Chen Wen-Chi (陳文琦) and Lin Tzu-Mu (林子牧). In 2012, Wang was ranked 56th on the list of the 100 Most Influential Women in the World . In 2014 it was ranked 54th. 

Personal life

Wang comes from a large family. Her father was married several times and Cher Wang was the third daughter from her father's second marriage. She is married to Chen Wen-Chi, who is the CEO of VIA. The marriage resulted in two children. Wang is a Christian and an avid philanthropist.

Her father was once the richest man in Taiwan. The father gave little of the wealth to the children, which is why Cher Wang had to become independent quickly.

The philanthropist

As a child, Wang encountered other people's suffering through regular visits to the local hospital that her father had funded. Wang later became a philanthropist, donating US $ 28 million to Guizhou Forerunner College , an educational institution that provides three years of free education to students from low-income families.

Political position

In 2012, before the presidential election in Taiwan , Cher Wang held a press conference in which she publicly acknowledged the so-called " 1992 consensus ". This public statement by Cher Wang was assessed as supporting the Kuomintang . The pan-green coalition heavily criticized Wang's interference during the presidential campaign. As a result, HTC and VIA products were boycotted on the Internet.
