Cheracebus is a genus of monkeys from the subfamily of the jumper monkeys (Callicebinae). The genus was only introduced in March 2016 and includes the species of the former Callicebus torquatus group from the genus Callicebus . The scientific name is made up of “Chera” (= widow) and “Cebus” (= long-tailed monkey) and was given because the dark overall coloration and the often whitish hands of the animals are reminiscent of the mourning costume of widows. The line of development of the genus Cheracebus separated from the other jumper monkeys in the Middle Miocene about 11 million years ago.
features
Cheracebus species are generally larger than other jumper monkeys (with the exception of the masked jumper ( Callicebus personatus )). Arms and legs are very long, the arms reach a length of 67 to 73% of the trunk length, the legs are 90%. A whisker is not very well developed. The animals are blackish or red-brown in color, the top of the head is black, reddish, red-brown or mahogany-colored. A conspicuous white or yellow collar runs over the throat, the hands are whitish, blackish, yellowish or orange. The belly can be different in color from the back or show the same color. The surface of the upper molars is relatively smooth and simple. The chromosome set is diploid , the number of chromosomes is 20.
distribution
Cheracebus species live in the northwestern Amazon basin and the southern Orinoco basin . The distribution area is thus in northwestern Brazil, southeastern Colombia, southern Venezuela and in the extreme north of Peru. In the east it extends to the Rio Negro and Rio Branco , in the west to the Colombian Andes (Cordillera Occidental), in the north to the Río Guaviare and the Orinoco. The southern limit of the distribution area is determined by the lower reaches of the Rio Javari , Rio Juruá , Rio Purus and Rio Madeira . South of the Amazon, the monkeys often live sympatric with a species from the genus Plecturocebus .

The genus Cheracebus includes six species.
