Callicebus is a genus of monkeys from the subfamily of the Spring monkeys (Callicebinae). The scientific name is made up of “Calli” ( Gr .: “Kalos” = beautiful) and “Cebus” (formerly generic name used for long-tailed South American monkeys).
features
Compared to other jumper species , the Callicebus species are relatively large. They are mostly gray, light brown or ocher colored animals with dark faces, ears and dark hands and feet. The tail is the same color as the rest of the body or is reddish. The back hair is shaggy and woolly and often curled like an agouti with two to four dark bands. This can give the back a streaky appearance. The surface of the upper molars is very uneven and has the largest number of cusps of all jumper molars.

distribution
Callicebus species live exclusively in eastern Brazil, in the Atlantic rainforest and in forest islands in the Caatinga south of the Rio São Francisco . The distribution area is in the states of Bahia , Espírito Santo , Minas Gerais , Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo . To the west it extends to the upper reaches of the Río Paraná .
Systematics
The genus Callicebus was introduced in 1903 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas . Originally all species of jumping monkeys belonged to this genus. In March 2016, two more genera for the Amazonian jumping monkey species were introduced, Cheracebus and Plecturocebus . The genus Callicebus today only includes the former C. personatus group. They are the only jumping monkeys to live in east and south-east Brazil. The separation of the three species of jumping monkey took place in the middle and late Miocene .
species
There are five species in the genus Callicebus .
- Northern bahian spring monkey ( Callicebus barbarabrownae )
- Coimbra spring monkey ( Callicebus coimbrai )
- Southern Bahia Spring monkey ( Callicebus melanochir )
- Black-fronted Spring monkey ( Callicebus nigrifrons )
- Masked Jumping Monkey ( Callicebus personatus )
