Chesapeake is a town in southern Lawrence County in the US state of Ohio . It is 1.5 km² and had (2000) 842 inhabitants, 97.7% of them white. The name is identical to an Indian tribe from Virginia .

The village is located around 8.5 km east of the southern tip of Ohio, at the confluence of Symmes Creek in the Ohio River , which forms the southern border with West Virginia here. Huntington's disease is directly opposite ; the two places are connected by a road bridge, the Robert C. Byrd Bridge.

Chesapeake, Ohio

The town's history dates back to the early years of Lawrence County (founded in 1816). First, a scattered settlement called Kounston was created , named after its first settler, George W. Kouns. The present town and name go back to the Central Land Company of West Virginia. This had bought the land around the mouth of the Symmes Creek on a large scale and marketed it under this name. In 1907 that Chesapeake was finally spun off as a Village. The first bridge over the Ohio was built in 1926, today's Robert C. Byrd Bridge dates from 1994.
