Chester Pierce Butler

Chester Pierce Butler (born March 21, 1798 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , †  October 5, 1850 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1850 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Chester Butler attended the Wilkes-Barre Academy , whose curator he would later become between 1818 and 1838. In 1817 he graduated from Princeton College . After a subsequent law degree at Litchfield Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1820, he began to work in Wilkes-Barre in this profession. Between 1821 and 1824 he worked as a register and recorder for the administration of Lucerne County . He was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1832, 1838, 1839, and 1843 . He became a member of the Whig Party , founded in the 1830s .

In the congressional election of 1846 Butler was elected in the eleventh constituency of Pennsylvania to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat Owen D. Leib on March 4, 1847 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 5, 1850 . Initially, his time as a member of parliament was marked by the events of the Mexican-American War . After that, the discussions about slavery were in the foreground. In the year of Butler's death, the compromise of 1850 drawn up by Henry Clay was passed.
