Chichaoua ( Arabic شيشاوة, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵛⵉⵛⴰⵡⴰ Cicawa ) is about 30,000 inhabitants provincial capital in the region Marrakech-Safi in south-central Morocco .

Location and climate

The town of Chichaoua, located about 340  m above sea level, is about 90 km (driving distance) west of Marrakech and about 100 km east of the coastal city of Essaouira . Chichaoua is conveniently located on the A7 motorway, which connects the coastal cities of Casablanca and Agadir via the hinterland . The climate is steppe-like; Rain (approx. 240 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the winter half-year.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Chichaoua was one of only a few villages in the region with hardly more than 1,000 inhabitants. The city's population, which has been growing rapidly since the last decades of the 20th century, consists to a large extent of immigrant Berbers . However, Moroccan Arabic is mainly spoken .

economy

In earlier times agriculture, cattle breeding and the production of Berber carpets played the largest role in the economic life of the town, today the city of Chichaoua is the center of a large phosphate deposit in southern Morocco that was only developed in the 1990s . As a result, workers, artisans, small traders and other tradespeople have settled here.
