The Bloodhound is an FCI recognized dog breed , the breed standard of which is being developed in Belgium ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.1, Standard No. 84 ).
Origin and history
The origins of the breed probably go back to the 2nd century when the ancestors of the breed were used as a hound by the Celts and Gauls . It was bred by the monks of the Saint-Hubert monastery in the Ardennes and served in royal packs until the 16th century . In the 11th century the Hubertushund came to England and was called the Bloodhound there . Today's Bloodhound is a selected Hubertus dog that is still listed in the Belgian stud book.
The origin of the name Bloodhound has not been clearly established . One possibility would be “of noble blood”, another, more likely, derives the name from the ability to trace the blood trail of injured game, called sweat trail in the hunter's language - in this sense it functions as a bloodhound .
In continental Europe, especially in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, the Hubertushund was further bred as a pure hunting dog under the name Ardennenbracke in the form of a so-called work strike . The dogs from the Ardennes Abbey are considered the ancestors of many other bracken breeds , especially the bloodhound breeds . Some foresters and professional hunters still use the Ardennes Hound for hunting. They particularly appreciate the fine nose, the will to find and the special focus on the handler of this big game hunting dog, qualities that made the breeders in the Ardennes monastery of Saint-Hubert famous.

This gentle, intelligent and affectionate dog has fine short hair in two-tone black and tan , two-tone liver and tan, or solid red. It can grow up to 70 cm with a weight of 50 kg. The ears are very long, thin and reach over the tip of the nose. The neck is designed in such a way that the dog can easily reach the ground with its nose when it is full. The Bloodhound (Hubertushund) originally hunted in packs; he is one of the oldest large hounds, who can also hunt deer and has a good nose for it.
The Bloodhound is said to have the world's best dog nose. When used as a tracking dog, he can often pick up and follow a day-old track even under the most unfavorable conditions.

The breed standard describes the ideal Bloodhound as gentle, calm, friendly and sociable with people and particularly influenced by its master. He is rather reserved and stubborn and is equally sensitive to praise and criticism.
