List of domestic dogs

The Chien de Trait Belge ( fr . For Belgian draft dog ) was a dog breed from Belgium recognized by the FCI ( FCI group 2, section 2, standard no. 69 ). The breed is considered extinct and has been removed from their lists by the FCI.

description

The Chien de Trait Belge was a large-framed dog of the Molosser type , which was used as a pulling dog for smaller wagons and also as a guardian for the house and yard. He was valued for his calm demeanor and good obedience. The fur was short and smooth, in shades of fawn , brindle , occasionally with white markings, a dark mask was permitted. The head was heavy, with a wide muzzle and half-drooping, tilted ears.

The first standard was drawn up in 1899, and the first breed club for the breed was established in Brussels in 1900 . The decline of the breed began as early as the First World War : The dogs were drafted into the military because they were needed as draft animals for weapons, especially machine guns ; very few specimens survived. The motorization that began after the war made the breed increasingly obsolete as a pulling dog, so that the population continued to decline. Some dogs were still alive around 1960 and 1970.

Today in Belgium attempts are being made to re-create the breed.
