Chill Out is an Ambient - concept album by The KLF , released in February 1990 on their own label. The album is a nocturnal drive on the Gulf Coast of the USA from the Mexican - Texan border to Louisiana .

Chill Out is considered a groundbreaking ambient album . David Toop writes in the Times that Chill Out not only founded the genre term " Chill-out ", but also the genre "Ambient House".

style

The album consists of a continuous composition that has been split into 14 parts. It is more reminiscent of a sound collage than pure ambient through a multitude of different samples such as pieces by Elvis Presley , Fleetwood Mac , Acker Bilk or the throat singing of Tuvin monks. These samples and effects are overlaid with original music from The KLF (including synthesizers and a pedal steel guitar ).

After the recording, the music reminded the duo of a trip through the US Deep South .

“I've never been to these places. I don't know what these places are like, but in my head I can imagine that these sounds come from those places, just looking at the map. "

- Bill Drummond from The KLF

reception

John Bush gave the album five out of five stars and wrote on allmusic :

"Chill Out consists largely of fragmented, heavily reverbed steel guitar, environmental sounds (birds, trains), occasional synth, and an angelic vocal chorus repeating the KLF's own" Justified and Ancient "theme. Throughout, Drummond and Cauty display an instinctive talent for wallpaper music that's truly diverting, making Chill Out one of the essential ambient albums. "
