The structure is a leaning viaduct ( slope bridge ) that runs on Lake Geneva above the Château de Chillon at a maximum height of 50 m above ground. The prestressed concrete structure was built from 1966 and was completed in 1969. The viaduct consists of two superstructures with 23 fields and spans of 42.3 + 94.8 + 2 × 104.0 + 98.0 + 4 × 92.0 + 98.0 + 104.0 + 98.0 + 4 × 92.0 + 98.0 + 104.0 + 98.0 + 3 × 92.0 + 45.4 m. The box girder bridges are each 13.0 m wide and have a variable overall height. In the field they are 2.20 m high, above the supports between 5.0 and 5.64 m. The pillars, which are up to 44 m high, consist of two 80 cm thick and 5.0 m wide reinforced concrete slices that are spaced 8.0 m apart.

The bridge was built in cantilever with precast segment parts. The prefabricated parts were assembled with a front frame , a steel portal crane bridge, which was supported on the bridge pillar and the completed bridge, and glued with epoxy resin .

The Chillion Viaduct was designed by Jean-Claude Piguet, Roland Hofer and Maurice Tappy. It was the first project in Switzerland in which this procedure was used. Jean Muller had carried out this construction shortly before at the Viaduc d'Oléron .
