Chimaera is a genus from the family of the short-nosed chimeras (Chimaeridae) in the order of the sea ​​cats (Chimaeriformes). The fish are found in all oceans, for the most part in the deep sea . The genus was introduced in 1758 by Carl von Linné , the founder of the biological classification system , in his Systema Naturae and named after the Chimera, a hybrid creature of Greek mythology .

Most Chimaera species reach body lengths of 65 to 120 cm, Chimaera monstrosa , the largest species, becomes 150 cm long.
