The Chinese beautiful fruit ( Callicarpa giraldii ), also simply called beautiful fruit , purple beautiful fruit or love pearl bush , is a species of plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens in temperate climates . Mainly the variety 'Profusion' of the variety Callicarpa giraldii var. Giraldii is planted. This plant species is native to central to western China , at altitudes of 200 to 3400 meters.

description

Callicarpa giraldii is a deciduous, medium-high shrub with upright branches and loose, somewhat sparse branches. It reaches heights of two to three meters and is up to two meters wide. The opposite, simple leaves are pointed long, 5 to 17 inches long, 2 to 10 inches wide and dull green. The leaf margin is sawn. The petiole is 0.6 to 2 inches long.

The flowers are in an axillary, zymous inflorescence , which has a diameter of one to three centimeters. The hermaphrodite, inconspicuous, light-purple flowers are radial symmetry and four-fold. The four sepals are fused bell-shaped. The initially hairy calyx tube has a diameter of about one and a half millimeters and ends in four calyx teeth that are shorter than 0.5 millimeters. The four petals are bell-shaped to roehrig fused. There are yellow glands on the petals that distinguish the Chinese beautiful fruit from the closely related species Callicarpa bodinieri . The four stamens that are fused with the corolla tube stand in only one circle and are about four to six millimeters long. Two carpels have become an ovary grown. The stylus is usually longer than the stamens. The flowering period extends from July to August.

The berry-like stone fruits that form in large numbers on the biennial wood are very decorative . They are purple, shiny and reach a diameter of 2.5 to 4 millimeters. Some birds capable of learning have now accepted the fruit as a source of food in cold winters, despite the unusual color. However, the fruits are poisonous to humans.
